Allow me to run a balance sheet at any date. Just allow me to pick a date, not a period, and NOT only one that corresponds with month-end.
When you want a balance sheet by date for anything other than current, you have to pick a particular date range. It's a balance sheet at a point in time so there should be no range option unless you make it clear that that the purpose of the range is for the underlying ledger account reports.
You also don't let me pick a balance sheet at any date, only month-ends.
