Some processes require special handling of checks and/or subsequent handling of the stubs to be matched with paper (eww) documentation. Having the stubs in alphabetical order would facility those processes.
The current printing is printing the checks in order of creation. This can actually cause further confusion because checks can be post dated and printed as part of a batch.
